I just had to come on here and bitch so here I go. Today when I got to school I found out that Im suspended for two days because during one of my breaks I went across the street to the dollar store and bought a bag of chips and soda. I just wanted to come on and vent.
Serves you right. If the rules say that you are not allowed to do such a thing, then you are not. I do wish that over here more schools were willing to take such steps against their students for breaches of school discipline. It may seem disproportionate at first sight but I'm sure the school has its reasons for such a rule. Certainly when I was younger you could be suspended if you failed on several occasions to observe the dress code.
Lawlord's right, but that really sucks.
that'll learn ya
hi. sorry to hear this DM though LL has a point. My school was pathetic with those sorts of rules as well. but I spose they have to be cos they're supposed to be resonsible in the absence of parents/guardians. and yes, we also had to be in our entire uniform every day or else .. note from parents??
What!? they suspended you for buying something to eat whats next honestly the mind boggles ...they should be congratulating you on your independence and resourcefulness
Hey, wanna trade schools? I wouldn't mind a couple of suspentions. Goblin, I suppose the fact this person could have been hit by a car makes no difference to you? I have no idea how capable of a traveler darkmaster is, so I reserve judgement.
Amen to that. It is due very much to the fact that if you had been hit by a car, the school might have incurred liability in negligence in that they failed in their duty of care in loco parentis. So I think that the suspension was entirely justified and stand by what I said. If you don't get enough to eat during school hours that is a matter for the school.
We used to get great school dinners, especially when I first started school back in 1983. Back then, see, there were no neutritional guidelines etc. so our school used to do things like make its own crisps. Wonderful stuff! Meals that were cheap but really filling: spam fritters for example, sounds like something out of the 1940's and rationing, doesn't it? Well they underwent a resurgeance in my primary school in days of yore, and they were bloody lovely. And hats off also to the buttery chef at st John's College, Oxford University, who created a very filling desert of deep fried jam sandwiches with custard. really nice that was.
I think suspending is stupid. In school suspenshion makes sense but out of school doesn't. Schools are supposed to promote education and teach students right? So if they suspend you then they are refusing to teach you since you can't makeup missed assignments. There's kids at my school who get suspended all the time on purpose just so they don't have to come to school.
i agree with lawlord. you get suspended cause otherwise the school would be liable for your actions.
Uh shouldn't this be on the Rant Board? I mean you're POed at something. I agree, you got suspended because while you're in school and on their watch, they are liabal for your actions i.e. You being kidnapped, injured, murdered, you stealing something (the store can also go after the school and you and your parents.), or you get sick. IF you wanted chips and soda why couldn't you buy that shit before you walked on school grounds? No brainer really. And most schools (not all) have a snack bar area so during lunch hours you can buy the junk. And besides most schools don't allow you to eat or drink in class. So I think the school did the right thing by suspending you.
Just a minute Blindvi. If a criminal offence were committed, then the school would not be liable because one cannot have vicarious liability in crime. However, my point was more that if this particular person were to go out of school to buy crisps and sweets and to be injured on the way, the school would be liable in the tort of negligence. That is a civil matter and quite distinct from a crime. It is also probable that the school would be liable for any torts committed by the student in question, although it is an interesting point whether the maxim 'qui facit per alium, facit per se' extends to scholars and schools.
Anyway you shouldn't be eating crisps an sweets in school for goodness sake! and I'm afraid I don't accept the argument that suspending a student constitutes a denial of the student's right to be educated, that argument is ridiculous. Schools are there for the benefit of the pupils as a whole, not one pupil in particular. Suspension in school, which I believe might be equivalent to isolation within the school complex, is simply impossible to implement in many cases. as for habitual offenders who keep getting suspended, in this country they are sent to pupil referral units.
Although personally, I'd flush them into the Thames.
I thank everybody for at least giving your opinion on this situation positive or negative I really appreciate it. I want to explain this a little more because I feel I wasn't describing it that well. I go to night school not regular day school. Night school is for the students that are missing alot of credits or didnt graduate and are trying to get the little bit of credits they need left to get there diploma. I go at night because I didnt graduate in 2004 with my class. Night school starts at 3:00p.m. and ends at 7:20p.m. In all that time we get two breaks. Our first break starts at 4:00 and ends at 4:15. Second break is at 6:00 and ends at 6:15. In these breaks we go and use the restroom, hang out with each other, and so on. On first break I went with two of my friends to the dollar store to get my food because the soda machine in school has stolen alot of money from me. For example if I put one of my dollars in the machine and push the button for the drink I want, it wont give me anything, it will just make a noise and stop. I aint even gonna try the chips machine bacause its either always off or out of order. So I decided to go to the dollar store and get my food as my last resort. I think that the suspension was a bit to harsh because if you think about it, if they really wanted to punish me they would of kept me after school for detention or take away my breaks for a week. To me the suspension is just a big nice vacation for me to just kick back and relax. I hope I explained this as best as I could, if you have more questions please post them here.
But it's not about you, your post entirely misses the point I'm afraid. It's about your wandering out of bounds when unauthorised to do so, getting injured and your parents suing the school for breach of their duty of care to you. I hope that makes it clearer. and just out of interest, a break after only one hour's study? You really shouldn't be needing food at that stage, you know. You need to develop a bit more staminour.
I agree with everyone here. You arn't suppose to go off of school grounds during break. Now some places of work allow their employees to do that but this is school. One other suggestion, why don't you report the problems about the machines? If you report them maybe they'll be fixed.
Troy
Or alternatively, why don't you try eating something healthier than crisps and sweets? If it were a school in this country, there would be no soda and sweet machines in the school as I think that the government has now got rid of them in schools. I'm as fond of chocolate etc. as the next man, but I can't say I ever ate things like that while I was in school. I don't think you're going to get much sympathy for your plight here I'm afraid.
It's not as if you have to hold out for very long at night school anyway, is it? I mean, 3 PM till around 7.30 PM? that's but a token gesture at a long day's work! Cup of coffee and a slice of cake or something similar should serve your purposes adequately during this short period of time, then head off down the pub when your school finishes for a few beers and a slap-up meal.
You went to the chip shop and was suspended for it? there shouldn't be a rule against something like that and even if there is, you shouldn't be denied an education simply because you went to the chipshop. Stand up for your freedom, don't accept these unnecessary restrictions on it. I hope you are successfull in resolving the situation to your satisfaction. The school has over reacted and only do gooders who always suck up to those making the rules and never to those breaking the rules would disagree.
Rubbish, Wainderful Wangel, arrant nonsense from start to finish. You've obviously read nothing about the reasoning that has been advanced for rules such as these. these rules are not there purely to make people's lives awkward; they are not there to annoy people; they are not there in order to oppress the proletariat or any other such revolutionery nonsense; they are argyably not even there for the benefit of the pupil. nay, they are there for the benefit of the school as much as the pupil, if not moreso. Now, if Wainderful Wangel wanders out of school to buy a packet of crisps and a can of drink during school hours, but is unfortunately and tragically run down by an articulated lorry, what will his parents say? I'll tell you: they'll say, what the hell were the school thinking of, allowing him out onto the road during the day like that? Are they not under a duty of care to the students in their charge? are they not in loco parentis? But of course, they will answer themselves. They'll then take themselves off to the solicitors who will advise them that they have a good case in negligence against the school, and the school will be sued by the Wainderful wangel for personal injury (Although assuming he is still a minor it would be by his parents as litigation friends). Wainderful Wangel might well lose, but he might well win and if the latter, the school will have to pay him damages. now we can't have that! So, the school is forced unfortunately to keep the junk-food junkies and the unruly ruffians within the confines of the school complex, lest it be exposed to protracted litigation from disgusted parents and children when the children get injured, with the encouragement of Messrs Sue, Grabbit and Run. Has the penny dropped yet, wainderful wangel? I sincerely hope so. Let's have no more of this nonsense about standing up for freedom and this claptrap about do-gooders eh? And try reading the posts to this topic before you intervene in a manner that is so wide of the mark.
Besides, discipline is good for you, and it's probably the absence thereof, relatively speaking, which explains the somewhat meteoric rise in youth offending in the last twenty years.
He did not need suspending for that though. He coulde have been detained after school, that would have been a far fairer punnishment. When you suspend people who probably work in their lessons simply for going to the chipshop they miss days of valuable education and that's not fair on them or society, because if they are so heavily restricted they're more likely to rebel at an older age creating problems for their community. Suspentions you give to people who fight, cause damage to property, or constantly disrupt lessons, not people who go to the chipshop. They deserve more lenient punnishments.
Rubbish, for the reasons set out above. If this chap is as good a character as you say, then he will learn from his mistake and not do it again. therefore, the punishment will have served its purpose whereas a detention might well not have been sufficient. zero tolerance strategies work, the proof is all around us. These woolly-minded fools who think we can reform recalcitrants by giving them knitting lessons and sweeties have an awful lot to learn.
I feel really bad about the whole thing!!! You've got all my sympathy. I do think that it was too harsh and to all you goody goodys, (lawlord) go hang!!!
I don’t usually talk on here, but from what I have read, I think we have the largest ass kisser among us. I bet his teachers have the cleanest ass thanks to him. I hope mister perfect will be successful during his princely life; after all he should, because I bet he received numerous hand outs from under the table.
From now on zoners, Mr. Goody Two-shoes will be affectionately known as the princely asshole, who never does anything wrong and strictly abides by the rules. A suspension from school for 2 whole days is definitely not the way to go. Although the guy is blind, he's certainly not a piece of tissue paper needed to wipe someone's ass. Looking forward to your most scholarly response.
